In a world where empires are re-emerging and the war for resources is reshaping power relations, Europe faces a decisive question: can it still guarantee its sovereignty? Can it escape vassalization and museification?
At a time of multiple dependencies — whether energy, industrial, technological, agricultural or military — it is urgent to question, without evasion, our continent’s ability to remain master of its own destiny. Is Europe truly sovereign when, for example, the support of the United States — as is currently the case in Ukraine — is indispensable to counter the aggression of a foreign power? When other powers act on its soil or dictate the terms of its prosperity, it is the very idea of Europe as a free and independent power that falters. While the great powers secure their resources and arm their strategic autonomy, Europe negotiates, hesitates, and depends. Every crisis reveals the same truth: we consume the sovereignty of others.
The European Union must free itself from these dependencies. But the path to sovereignty begins with economic recovery, affordable energy production, the development of hard skills, and massive reindustrialization. How can we remain competitive when electricity costs more than twice as much as in China, the United States, or India? When the continent files 17 times fewer patent applications than China? When grid connection delays are twice as long as in the U.S.? And so on.
For the first time in Belgium, an international conference devoted entirely to strategic autonomy will bring together, in one location — the Egmont Palace in Brussels — leading figures from across Europe.
In the face of geopolitical urgency, our continent must reinvent itself: unleash its energies, simplify and streamline regulation, rethink its frameworks, and breathe new life into prosperity and entrepreneurial freedom. Becoming a superpower again is not an option — it is a necessity to preserve the European project itself.
Join this day of reflection and decision in the heart of Brussels to help redefine the course of a sovereign, strong Europe — capable of defending, on the international stage, the rule of law, fundamental freedoms, and universal rights.
